IT Technical Dictionary
With so many acronyms and technical terms flying about, we thought it might be useful to have a one-stop "in plain english" reference guide for most of the common terms you will encounter. Let us know if there are any missing, or if you disagree with any of our technical definitions.
BPM
Business Process Management is all about using technology to make business processes more efficient and less time consuming, and thus completing the same processes with fewer resources. In other words, it’s about streamlining operations to save money. Many IT departments and IT service agents are focusing on BPM as a way to transform the image of IT from a cost center to a value center.

ITaaS
Short hand for IT-as-a-Service. The idea of bundling a combination of software, hardware and managed services into a package and supplying to an organization an entire enterprise quality IT infrastructure irrespective of how many locations or sites the organization operates from. Although these can be priced in many ways Pemrose opts to charge on a per user basis, and where possible negate the need to make large capital investments in software licenses or IT equipment. Because these services are consumed in much the same way as electricity or gas, the term "Utility Computing" has been coined to describe this model.

SaaS
Shorthand for Software-as-a-Service. SaaS is a software delivery method that provides access to software and its functions remotely. SaaS applications are often Web-based services accessed using a common web browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. SaaS allows organizations to access business functionality at a cost typically less than paying for licensed applications since SaaS pricing is based on a monthly fee. Also, because the software is hosted remotely, users don't need to invest in additional hardware. SaaS removes the need for organizations to handle the installation, set-up and often daily upkeep and maintenance. Software as a Service may also be referred to as simply hosted applications and their providers are known as ASPs (Application Service Providers).

TCO

Total cost of ownership is a phrase coined by the Gartner Group in 1987, and it has developed into a useful formula for arriving at the full costs involved in deploying and managing technology tools. TCO calculations provide assistance with product selection, because they are a valuable part of estimating return on investment (ROI). With tech budgets tightening in 2008, TCO and ROI will become even more critical in helping IT departments decide how to best spend their constrained budgets.

Learn how to reduce your TCO and justify ROI over 1 month, not several years...
